Before they were Hokies, they were Gobblers. Before they were VT, they were VPI. Coach Branch Bocock first originated the "Gobblers" nickname in 1909. In 1971, the school appended "Fightin'" to "Gobblers". In 1981, Football Coach and AD Bill Dooley changed the nickname officially to "Hokies."
